Primary Health Care in Kibera, Nairobi

Gatwekera, Nairobi - February 16, 2011.
Kibera is one of the largest slums in Kenya - located about 5km south-west of the city. Geographically divided into 12 ethnically heterogeneous villages of similarly poor conditions, this sprawling slum it is one of the most densely populated districts of Nairobi. In the Kibera Slum, MSF offers care to a neglected population isolated from the basic standards of human dignity, due to poverty, violence and exclusion from healthcare, with a particular focus on women, children, elderly and victims of gender-based violence.
MSF provides free primary healthcare in three clinics in Kibera integrating a HIV/AIDS and TB comprehensive care package and treatment for chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Care for sexual violence is also integrated in the Kibera project, via a new vertical clinic.
